KTX 전용 이어폰 구멍 ; Earphone holes for KTX only

I took a train of KTX with my family for one-day-trip to Pusan. There were LCD-TV screens in the car, and I couldn't take my eyes off the comedy show. So I plugged-out the earphone from my iPod, and plugged-in it into the hole on the arm-rest. I couldn't hear anything, however, then I realised that I can only use the specific earphone bought from a trainman which has two jacks, one of them is smaller than ordinary one. KTX was selling KTX-only earphone for 800 won.(Approx. 1 US doller, 100 Yen, Feb 28, 2007)

I understand that KTX is charging customers through selling earphones to pay for broadcasting contents, but what can we do with useless earphones at home? What is more, people will forget that they have one, take the train again and buy another KTX-only to kill their boring time. My father also has two useless KTX-only earphones at home.

Earphone is somewhat complicated product in material which consists of plastics, metal, rubber, silicon, sponges, etc, which is NOT easy-recyclable. According to a train man on that train, KTX has recently changed their TV-system, which means it's not an old system imported from. (K.T.X. has been developed based on T.G.V., France)

There are a lot of payment method nowadays e.g. credit card, mobile-phone, travel card and so on. I don't think it was impossible to develop a way to sell admissions through car and seat numbers. KTX is helping 3 million people a month. I don't know how many travelers are buying those, but shouldn't KTX think about what's going to happen to ear-phones being wasted?

얼마전 어머니 아버지와 부산으로 여행을 갔다.
당일 여행계획이였기 때문에 가장 빠른 KTX(약 2시간 30분)를 타고 갔다.
긴 시간은 아니였지만 열차의 천정에 달린 TV의 코메디 쇼에 자꾸 눈이 갔다.
듣고 있던 iPod에서 이어폰을 빼서 좌석 팔걸이의 잭에 꽂았다.
소리가 나오지 않았다. 자세히 보니 하나는 작고 하나는 큰 두개의 잭이 있는것.

형에게 물어보니, KTX에서 전용 이어폰을 판매한다는 것이었다. 800원정도 한다나? 즉, 방송 시청권을 이어폰의 형태로 판매하는 것으로 보였다. 아! 그러고 보니 아버지 책장에 있던 2개의 KTX로고가 박힌 이어폰이 생각났다.

KTX 역시 컨텐츠를 신디케이트 하는 과정에서 지출이 있을것이고, 그것에 과금을 하려는 것은 충분히 이해할 수 있다. 하지만 집에 쌓여갈, 그리고 버려질 수많은 800원짜리 이어폰은 어떻게 할것인가? 표준에 맞지 않아 극히 일부인 항공사와 열차에서만 이용되는 이어폰은 800원이라는 부담없는 가격과 함께 사용자에게 잊혀질것이고, 많은 경우 서울-부산을 이동하는 심심한 여행객에 의해 재구매되고, 다시 방 한 구석에 처박혀 있다가 새해 청소를 할 때 일반 쓰레기와 함께 버려질것이다. 이어폰은 스펀지, 금속, 플라스틱, 고무 등으로 이루어져 재활용이 용이치 않는 제품이다.

KTX의 시스템이 프랑스에서 수입되었다고 들었던 나는, 최근에 국내에서 만들어진 시스템이 아니길 바라며 역무원에게 이 시스템이 KTX가 론칭되던 시점에 만들어졌는지 물어보았다. 대답은 아주 최근에 국내업체에 의해 설치되었다는 것. 원래의 KTX는 수입 당시 TV 마저 브라운관 타입이였는데, 최근 LCD로 교체하면서 설치된 시스템이라는 것이다.

요즘은 결제방식과 시스템이 많이 개발되어 있어, 휴대폰이나 신용카드, 교통카드등을 통한 소액결제가 전혀 어렵지 않은 상황이다. 열차번호와 좌석번호를 통해 방청권을 판매하는 시스템은 개발하는 것이 어려웠을까? 하루 평균 10만명이 이용하는 KTX, 많은 유동인구를 확보할 수록 많은 고려를 통해 시스템을 구축해야 하는 것은 아닐까?

A watch that doesn't show exact time but talks what time it is around. As you touch the sensor on the front of 'Easy Watch', it tells you approximate time.

주중에도, 주말에도 항상 시계를 들여다보는 나는 친구, 가족, 책, 그리고 나의 상상에서 점점 멀어지는 듯 하다. 바쁜 일상에서 잠시 멀어져 내 안으로 시선을 돌려보자. 완전한 휴식은 사실, 늘 내 주변에 그리고 내 안에 있다.
