We believe that design, responsibly conceived and applied, can contribute to solving such contemporary challenges as sustainable development and providing for basic needs and services, including adequate public health, safety, education, housing and transportation.

We seek to forge collaborations with individuals, educational and cultural institutions, industry, community agencies and international organizations that yield tangible solutions to contemporary social challenges.

Our Vision

In accord with the overall curricular philosophy at Art Center, our goal is to help educate a new generation of designers who can advocate design as a force for positive social change. Empowering designers to take a unique leadership role in contributing to problem solving, efficient technologies and low-cost production strategies—to making a difference in the lives of people and our planet—is at the root of the Designmatters initiative.


인상 깊었던 부분 중 하나는 ACCD가 UN(United Nations)이 최초로 지정한 디자인 학교로서의 NGO가 되었다는 점이다. UN은 많은 NGO들과의 협력으로 글로벌 사회의 긍정적 변화를 모색하는 단체이다. 이에 앞장서서 Design Matters가 UN과의 협력을 통해 그 뜻의 보급과 임무 수행에 힘쓰고 있는 것이다. 여기서 주목하고 싶은 점은 Design Matters의 설립 목적과 활동 뿐 아니라 글로벌 사회 조직인 UN이 디자인이 가진 사회적인 힘을 인지하고 있다는 것이다.

design process에 대해 생각해보았다.
판매를 통한 이윤추구가 목적이 된 디자인은 주 타겟층을 정하고,
그들의 needs을 발견하여 구매욕을 자극시켜 이윤을 창출해낸다.
따라서, 그 process에서는 이러한 목적을 달성하기 위한 다양한 리서치가 시작되고,
주로 그들의 행위를 관찰하고 분석하여,
그들을 기쁘게 하고, 그들을 좀 더 편하게 만족시키기 위한 목표를 가지고 진행된다.
(and so on....)

가만히 생각해보자.
이 세상 모든 디자인된 생산품이 위와 같은 process를 거친다면 이 세상은 변화 할 수 있을까?

우리의 타겟은 누구인가.
우리의 목적은 무엇인가.
우리가 꿈꾸는 목표는 무엇인가.

분명 위의 것과는 많이 다를 것이다.

우리 안에선  design process를 규정지을 필요가 없을 수도 있다.
그러나 세상이 변하기 위해선 보편적인 design process가 달라져야 한다.
고려해야 할 것은 무엇인가.
관찰해야 할 것은 무엇인가.
분석해야 할 것은 무엇인가.


짧은 만족을 주는 세상을 바라지 않는다.

이것은 책 자체가 가방이 되는 디자인이다.
가방안의 책이 들어있는 것이 아니라, 책 안에 가방이 들어있는 것이다.
책 표지 안에 손잡이가 될 수 있는 구멍이 뚫려있어서 펼치면 가방이 된다.

이것은 책 표지에 붙은 천을 뒤집으면 가방안에 책이 들어가는 컨셉이다.

Beware of the quick consumption.

By opening the book cover it can be used as a bag handle.

이 가방은 한면은 루이비통, 다른 한 면은 샤넬로 한 가방이 두가지 브랜드를 가지고 있다.
가방을 매는 방향에 따라 각기 다른 브랜드 가방으로 보일 수 있다.
이 가방을 두 개의 가방처럼 사용한다면 당신은 가방보다는 브랜드가 필요했던건 아닌가?

Brand leads us to purchase same product continuously.

This bag has two identities with two brands. Switch the brand by switching the sides.

우리를 둘러싼 사물들은 자연을 제외한 모든 것이 디자인된 인공물이다. 이러한 사물들은 제각기 다른 형태를 지니고 있다. 그렇듯 디자이너가 만드는 한 사물의 형태는 사람들에게 고정관념을 심어주게 된다.

이것은 컵이 아니라 종이를 고정시키는 문진이다.

Object creates a fixed idea of form.

Every object around us is all artificially made, except nature. These objects have different kinds of forms. So what we design may create a fixed idea of form.

This is a not a cup, it is a paper weight.
